Medical Hosiery

Dr. Scholl's socks offers a broad selection of medical hosiery in a range of sizes and colors. There are many types of medical hosiery, the two most common being compression stockings and diabetic socks. These two types of socks are both non invasive methods to achieving a medical result at very little expense or visual impact. Patients who are using either type of medical hosiery have a range of fashion choices, so that they can reap the benefits of the socks/stockings completely discretely.

Diabetic socks are an important and common type of medical hosiery. Diabetic socks are woven of cushioned material, with a lot of stretch at the top, so that the sock can gently protect the vulnerable diabetic foot from the rigors of daily life. This type of sock typically has a seamless toe so as not to irritate the skin underneath, and the soles tend to be thicker than the rest of the sock, for added protection. Another feature of this type of sock is the selection of moisture wicking yarn and antimicrobial treatments to prevent the growth of undesirable microbes. This type of medical hosiery is an excellent addition to a diabetic's daily foot care routine.

Compression stockings are the other common type of medical hosiery. Most of the compression stockings are constructed to be “graduated”, which means that they are constructed to apply pressure all the way around the leg evenly, but the pressure is reduced as the stocking progresses up the leg. This type of stocking is designed not to protect the skin of the patient, but to help increase venous blood flow and fluid movement back up the leg. This type of medical hosiery has been used for a wide variety of applications, and is available in a variety of compression pressures, making them useful for a range of uses. Very mild pressures of graduated compression stockings can be used by individuals who have “heavy legs” at the end of the day. This type of compression stockingis often termed support hose. Compression stockings are also useful to help decrease or prevent varicose veins, to help travelers on long flights prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and to help athletes perform better. Higher pressures of graduated compression stockings are used for a variety of medical conditions, including severe varicose veins, venous skin ulcers, chronic peripheral venous insufficiency, lipodermatosclerosis, edema, and lymphedema. Always consult your physician before wearing graduated compression medical hosiery.
