Large Size Mens Socks

It can be very difficult finding socks for gentlemen who have larger shoe sizes. Large size mens socks are available straight from the manufacturer at Dr. Scholls socks. Large size mens socks are important because having well fitting socks can help keep feet warm in the winter, cooler in the summer, and work well to keep feet dry. Socks are important because they help protect the feet from injury, cushion them from the wear and tear of daily life, and keep them comfortable. They also can help wick moisture away (a foot can sweat as much as a pint of fluid a day). They function to provide a layer between a hard outer shoe or boot and the skin.

The first recorded socks as we know them were used by the ancient Greeks, and were made of felted animal hair. Before that (and afterward as well), small sacks of leather or fiber with drawstring tops were used, as well as pieces of cloth or leather wrapped around the foot were used. The earliest surviving pair of cloth socks is from 4th century AD, and is split into two to allow the use of sandals. The name comes from the Latin, soccus, which were loose fitting slippers that were worn by the Roman comic actors. Knit socks were a luxury item, being made from softer and more luxurious yarns, with more and more ornamentation through the middle ages and the Renaissance, until 1589, when the knitting machine was invented. Socks, even large size mens socks were still commonly hand-knit alongside the machine until the 19th century.

The next major development in the world of socks was the invention of nylon in 1938. Nylon fibers made it possible to blend fibers, which meant that the yarn could be spun based on the need and purpose of the sock maker.

Many different types of fibers are used to make yarn and socks. Natural fibers include many different types of wool from sheep and goats, including cashmere and mohair. Soft angora from rabbit fur and alpaca from llamas have been used to make socks for many years. Cotton is widely available and common, particularly in the New World. Silk, linen, and bamboo are also available, and are often added for softness.

Many synthetic fibers have been developed since nylon in 1938, and are used in the production of large sized mens socks. Polyester and acrylic have become incredibly common, and are generally less expensive to produce. Polyester is useful in large size mens socks production, specifically diabetic socks, because it does not absorb moistureand moves it away from the foot. Nylon, spandex, and olepins, such as polypropeline, are also used for various purposes in yarn production for socks.
