Ted Compression Stockings

Ted compression stockings, a brand name of compression socks, is also known as post surgical compression stockings or anti-embolism stockings. Graduated compression stockings such as these are designed for patients who are not ambulatory, such as nursing home patients and patients who are post surgical.

Ted compression stockings typically have the graduated compression style, but also have an “open toe” which is designed to allow caregivers and medical professionals monitor the circulation of a patient's extremity. The compression that Ted compression stockings applies to the legs of the patient is graduated. This means that it is specifically designed to force the venous blood from the patients feet back to the heart, so that it can be pumped back out to the body. This is especially important in patients who are post-surgical, as they often experience some blood loss and this helps them maintain healthy circulation in their body and their legs by preventing pooling blood. This also acts to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) which is always a concern of health care professionals after surgery.

Deep vein thrombosis is treated by Ted compression stockings by maintaining the pressure moving blood back to the heart from the feet and legs. This is very important in someone who is not moving out of bed or a chair much, because it is common to have blood pool in the lower extremity, form a clot, become inflamed, hot and painful, and ultimately result in a embolus, which is simply a piece of the clot that has broken off. This can travel to the heart, lungs, or brain, and cause serious problems. This is such a serious problem that Ted compression stockings are widely used in hospitals, along with a regular physical examination of the lower leg for heat and pain.

Ted compression stockings must be fit very carefully and put on carefully. Fit is important to insure that the stockings are not too loose, which would result in the pressure that the stocking exerts being too light, and making the stocking ineffective. If the stockings are too tight, problems with circulation could develop, as the pressure that the stockings exert could be too high against the arterial blood flow, and the circulation could be compromised. Twists and wrinkles can cause a risk of skin irritation, which in unwell patients can complicate their health prognosis.
