Graduated Compression Stocking

An important part of using a graduated compression stocking, whether it is a knee high, thigh high, or a panty hose style is to understand how to properly put them on. This is important because an ill fitting or badly worn stocking can cause problems by not applying the necessary pressure if it is too loose, or applying too much if it is too tight. Wrinkles and twists in the stockings can result in problems with the skin, where an area of skin can be rubbed and irritated. This can eventually result in blisters if it is not discovered. Also, if you find that you are experiencing numbness or tingling, or that your skin has taken on a bluish color in your stocking, remove the stockings immediately. These things indicate that you have cut off your circulation.

Here is a set of instructions on how to properly put on a graduated compression stocking:

Please note, wearing rubber gloves can help you grasp the stocking better if you have problems. Cornstarch or talcum can also assist you in putting on the stockings.

Grasp the graduated compression stocking by the top with both hands. Roll the graduated compression stocking towards the outside of the stocking, all the way down to the heel. Grasp the stocking at the top of the pocket where the heel is supposed to go.

Slide the toe of the stocking over your foot, making sure that it is positioned correctly, and that your heel will sit properly in the pocket made for the heel.

Unroll the graduated compression stocking on your leg, once again making sure that it is straight and untwisted, and that there are no wrinkles.

Knee high stockings should end about 1” below the knee.

Thigh high stockings should stop about halfway up the thigh.

A pantyhose style graduation compression stocking needs a little more adjustment than the other two types of stockings. It is best to pull them all the way up, make sure the crotch is snug and comfortable, and then adjust the waist band of the pantyhose.

Finally, after the stockings are comfortably positioned, start at the foot and pull, making sure that there are no wrinkles in the stocking.

Other things to note: If you are not a traveler using your stockings just during your flight, it is helpful to use your graduated compression stocking every day. If you cannot tolerate them all day, start a few hours at a time and increase the amount of time you wear them each day. They are best worn first thing in the morning. If you gain or lose weight, this may change how the stockings fit you. Follow the washing instructions on the packaging to extend the life of your graduated compression stocking. Do not fold or roll them down.
